WHAT THE FUCK IS IN YOUR MAKEUP?
Updated: Sep 24, 2019
It’s practically 2020, and celebrities are coming out with their own skin line, makeup, perfume, butt bleaching kits you name it. I am not trying to bash on these celebs pursuing their fucking billion-dollar dreams, but I think it is important to be aware of the ingredients in the products these celebs and mainstream brands are pushing out. If you understand the science of why vegan and cruelty-free is important you can not only help out animals but also optimize your beauty results to keep your skin younger and healthier.
Our friend/makeup artist/certified skin guru, Amy Lingenfelter has been educating us on the importance of why we should give a fuck about the ingredients in our makeup. Cosmetics have evolved dramatically since the earliest record of makeup, and there are a plethora of products to choose from to accentuate one’s beauty. Here are a few reasons why you should stop and read the ingredients before you hit the checkout line:
1. YOU ARE WHAT YOUR SKIN ABSORBS. About 60 to 70 percent of what you put on your skin is absorbed into your body. Do you really want synthetic chemical toxins absorbing into your skin? It’s a fucking scary thought to think about. It can have a long term effect on your body and even develop something life-threatening. In common deodorants, there are chemical ingredients found and antiperspirants including parabens, triclosan, phthalates, propylene glycol and aluminum which has been linked to cancer! YIKES!
2. FUCK YOU BEAUTY STANDARDS WHEN IT COMES TO ANIMAL RIGHTS. Animals are suffering and dying to test cosmetics for our own shallow meaningless beauty standards. They have forced chemicals down their throats, dripped into their eyes and onto their shaved skin. The top 9 animal testing countries in the world are the USA, Japan, China, Australia, France, Canada, the UK, Germany, and Brazil, in that order.
3. SCIENCE DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. A rabbit’s skin is more permeable than human’s skin, so testing directly on the animal's skin leads to flawed data since the skin is thinner and easily penetrated. The thinner the skin, the higher reaction of toxicity. There are other methods to conduct an accurate scientific study to conclude if a cosmetic product is safe to use.
Here’s a solution: buy and use vegan and cruelty-free skincare and makeup. According to PETA, “Vegan means that the product does not include any animal-derived ingredients. Cruelty-free means that the product was developed without any tests on animals.” Products that contain animal ingredient can be harsh on your skin and can fuck it up more. Plus, vegan products have been noted better for your skin anyways.
Giving light to the truth of cruelty-free and vegan products allows growth for change. Animal testing began as a way to gather data in the early 1900s, but the harm and lack of respect for animals increased, and it is a known fact that animal experiments are cruel, unreliable, and even dangerous. Luckily, new forms of testing have been created giving accurate effects for humans. Now that you know why you should care, at least a little bit, about why cruelty-free and vegan labels matter. Take a few moments to read the labels on your beauty products before purchasing them. Beauty products are a privilege to have and an important part of good health.
Do you use vegan and cruelty-free beauty products??
